On Sunday 15 th December 2019 the Provincial Grand Lodge of Devonshire held its Annual Christmas Carol Service of Readings and Carols at St Mary’s Church Plympton, Plymouth.
A wonderful event with over 350 or so Freemasons, families and friends filling the church in a superb service led by The Revd Prebendary Robert Harris. The voices from our Devonshire Masonic Choir led by W.Bro. Barrington Sowden gave us some superb songs including ‘Joy to the world’, Isacc Watts 1674-1748, ‘Do you hear what I hear’, Noel Regney and Gloria Baker 1847,’ The Coventry carol’, Robert Croo 1534 and ‘While Shepherds watched their flocks’, Lenghan interspersed with Carols for all to sing and readings all brilliantly read by the PGM, Dept PGM, AsstPGM’s , Provincial Wardens,
W.Bro. Andy Vodden ( who took the place of W.Bro. Colin Gale due to illness at the last minute) and the The Most Excellent Grand Superintendent of the Holy Royal Arch, VW.Bro Simon Rowe.
For many, the very best moment was when the children came up to sing ‘Away in a Manger’ and receive their gifts from the Provincial Grand Master.
A collection was taken at the service and was divided equally between St. Mary’s Church and the 2023 Festival.
A huge thank you to all who came, those who read, sung and generally made this a truly memorable event; to W.Bro. John Smerdon who designed and printed the Flyers and Orders of Service along with his photographic memories of the whole day and evening which can be viewed by clicking the link below.
After the Carol Service Brethren, their friends and families were given a chance to mingle with a welcome cup of tea and a biscuit at the back of the church.
The Provincial Grand Master in his welcome said “ We are particularly pleased to welcome the friends, families and the children of our Brethren. I would like to thank The Revd Prebendary Robert Harris for making us feel so at home in St Mary’s, the organist Mrs Lyudmila Collier, W.Bro. John Pritchard PPrJGW, Carol Service Co-ordinator and of course, the Devonshire Masonic Choir for their huge contributions today. We thank you all for coming and wish you a very peaceful and happy Christmas.”
A Great time was had by all who attended the evening Christmas Meal held at the Plympton Conservative Club. (See separate article)
Not only was the whole day a total success but also raised £1297.00 in total for the 2023 Festival.
