Personal Message from Rt.Wbro. M.T. Penny - Past Provincial Grand Master |
|
|
My Dear Brethren,
As my tenure as Provincial Grand Master of and over this
lovely Province of Devonshire has now drawn to a close, I
would like to repeat my thanks to you all for the warmth
kindness and support extended to me whilst I have had the
great privilege of serving this Province as a Member of the
Executive Team and over the last five and a half years as
your Provincial Grand Master.
In my letter advising you of my resignation I gave my thanks
to specific Brethren and also made reference to the pending
Festival for the RMTGB. This reached a very happy and
satisfactory conclusion at the Festival Dinner on the 17th
November 2012 at the Riviera International Conference Centre
Torquay. We shared the evening with many distinguished
guests from within our Masonic family, the Mayor of Torbay
and many Ladies and Brethren from within our Province. In my
earlier letter I indicated that I felt we would raise a sum
of which we could be justly proud and as you know we raised
the magnificent sum £3.84 million. What a phenomenal
response! This figure well exceeded my own personal
expectations and was very definitely a sum of which
undoubtedly we all could be very proud indeed! I have
already thanked everyone but in conclusion I must again pay
tribute to our Festival Chairman W Bro Bill Daw and our then
Charity Steward W Bro Conrad Donaldson for leading us so
well and enabling us to raise this wonderful sum.
So we now look forward to the future and I offer my warmest
congratulations to my successor VW Bro Ian Kingsbury PGSwdB.
on his appointment as Provincial Grand Master Designate of
and over this Province and I have no doubt that he will
discharge his duties and lead the province in his own
delightful and exemplary manner. I look forward to
supporting him in any way I can in the exciting future that
lies ahead
and I wish him and his Wife Toni the best of health and
every happiness in his new and important Office. Ian is
supported by a strong and talented Executive and Team of
Provincial Officers and I wish them all well in their new
roles and I have no doubt that Brethren will give them all
the same support that I enjoyed during my time as a Member
of the Executive.
So in signing off this stimulating and rewarding chapter of
my life I repeat my thanks to you all and send my very best
wishes for the future. I hope that we will all carry on
being kind to each other and happy and fulfilled in our
freemasonry.
May the Great Architect bless you all.
Sincerely and fraternally,
Michael T. Penny
Past Provincial Grand Master.

New
Masonic friends find themselves all at sea |
|
|
 |
During a recent cruise on P&O Azura, several Freemasons
got together for an afternoon cocktail party.
Unfortunately, due to a stringent health regime, imposed by
the Captain and his medical staff due to a danger of Noro
virus.
There could be no handshakes and no finger buffet, this
however did not deter us all from making new friends or from
holding a raffle, the proceeds of which were donated to the
Captains Sea Farers Charity.

Grand Charity shows continued support for hospices
with £600,000 nationwide |
|
|
Six hospices in Devon have received donations from Grand
Charity, totalling over £14,000. The various amounts break
down to Hospiscare (Exeter) £2703, North Devon Hospice
£1993, Rowcroft (Torquay) £2913, St. Luke’s (Plymouth)
£3838, Pine Lodge (Tiverton) £1000 and the Children’s
Hospice South West £1793. The amounts are arrived at by the
Grand Charity who use a formula which takes into account
many criteria.
239 adult and children’s hospices across England and Wales
have received a total of £600,000. Since 1984, £9.9 million
has been donated to hospices by the Grand Charity. All
donations are raised by Freemasons and their families and
aim to assist hospices in their vital role in helping those
affected by terminal or life limiting illness.
Speaking about the donations Right Worshipful Brother
Michael Penny, Provincial Grand Master said: “Every year
Freemasons all over the country work together to provide
funding for hospice services. The care provided by our local
hospices is exceptional, but financial support is
fundamental to ensuring a continued good service. We
recognise the vital role hospices play within our community
here in Devon and that is why we are so happy to continue
with our support in 2012”. |

Holy Royal Arch Bi-Centennial Appeal |
|
|
At the annual Convocation of the Provincial Grand Chapter
held Saturday 10th November the M.E. Grand Superintendant
made special mention in his address to the Bi-Centennial
Appeal in aid of the Royal Collage of Surgeons and announced
the prize draw for a very special prize :
"You have heard from our guests from the Royal College of
Surgeons in respect to some of the wonderful research and
phenomenal advancements made in medical science by these
Fellows of the College. The Bi-Centennial celebration will
culminate in a substantial donation made by all Royal Arch
Companions, raised through our special festival, of which I
know you are all aware. I would confirm that our collection
today will all go towards our donation made by every single
Companion of this Province to the HRA Festival. I thank all
Chapters and you my Companions for your kind donations to
date. We have already achieved somewhere in the region of
£17000 so far.
You will have seen our special guest, Simon Bear MD. This is
just for fun in raising as much money we can, with a smile.
All prizes for Simon Bears Draw have been donated by
Companions of our Province. I thank them most sincerely for
their generosity and hope you all will partake in this
fund draw." Please click here to

The draw will be made at our Annual Dinner on the 27th
July 2012.
Also at the meeting the Grand Superintendant was also able
to present our Provincial Grand Master with another Cheque
towards the 2012 Festival, which now brings the total from
the Holy Royal Arch to £90.000. Needless to say that this
came as a most welcome surprise to the Provincial Grand
Master who was greatly moved and delighted. |

Bishop Surtees Lodge No. 8497 – 300th meeting |
|
|
 |
On Friday 16th November 2012 at
Freemasons’ Hall Topsham members of Bishop Surtees Lodge
together with Asst.Prov.GM’s, W.Bro. Nicholas Ball, PSGD,
W.Bro. Peter Keaty, PSGD, W.Bro. Richard Speed, PSGD and
PAsst.ProvGM, W.Bro. Rev Louis Baycock, PSGD and 24 other
guests held their 300th meeting. The Worshipful Master,
W.Bro. Matthew Clear welcomed everyone to the meeting and
presented a cheque for £1200 to W.Bro. Ball for the 2012
Festival for the RMTGB which brought the Lodge’s total
donations to over £27,000. The evening’s ceremony was to
Pass Bro. Graham Nicholls and this was followed by the
Secretary, W.Bro. Bruce Marshall, PPrJGW recalling the
history of the Lodge.
|
Bishop Surtees Lodge was consecrated in
1973 and was founded as a lodge of research. Now in its 39th
year there are still two of the original 17 Founders in the
Lodge, W.Bro. Gordon Edwards, PPrJGW, who was Treasurer of
the Lodge for 38 years, and W.Bro. Roy Coombs, PPrJGW, both
of whom were present on the evening when they were presented
with Honorary Membership Certificates by the Worshipful
Master.
At the Festive Board afterwards an early Christmas dinner
was enjoyed by all present with a glass of port provided
with the cheese through a legacy from a late Past Master,
W.Bro. Justin Miles. An additional Toast for the evening was
proposed by the senior Past Master, W.Bro. Mike Lyons,
PPrJGW, the second Initiate in the Lodge, to the Lodge and
Founders to which W.Bro. Edwards responded. Needless to say
the Tyler’s Toast was a little later than usual but nobody
present appeared to mind!
Any Master Mason reading this who is interested in Masonic
research would be welcomed as a joining member

Boost for unemployed people in Devon |
|
|
|
The Prince’s Trust will support more unemployed young people
into jobs in Devon thanks to a new grant from The Grand
Charity.
The Grand Charity has awarded a major national grant of
£250,000 to The Prince’s Trust, which is being divided and
distributed to the youth charity’s projects across the
country.
The youth charity supports the UK’s most disadvantaged young
people, giving them the skills and confidence to get their
lives on track. Each of the 48 Metropolitan and Provincial
Grand Lodges in England and Wales will be making a donation
of £5,000 to a local Prince’s Trust project.
Molly Zoeller, from youth charity The Prince’s Trust said:
“Thousands of young people are struggling to find work in
Devon, which is a tragedy for the young people themselves -
and for the local economy. At The Prince’s Trust, we meet
young people every day who believe they have no future. We
think they are wrong.
“Thanks to The Grand Charity, we will be able to transform
more young lives, helping young people break out of
long-term unemployment and poverty.”
Worshipful Brother Colin Gale, Assistant Provincial Grand
Master for |
Devonshire, said: “It is clear that many young people are
being forced to put their ambitions on hold due to high
youth unemployment. This is an area of concern for all and
one which Freemasons are keen to help tackle, so we are
delighted to be able to help the Prince’s Trust support
vulnerable youngsters in Devon.”
This is the third annual national grant awarded by The Grand
Charity, to be distributed to projects throughout the
country, providing funding at a local level. The National
Grant is just one of the initiatives driven by The Grand Charity which donates millions of pounds
to charitable projects and services every year.

Prestonian Lecture 2012 |
|
|
 |
Once again Torbay Masters Lodge was privileged to host the
Prestonian Lecture for 2012. It was entitled; "Scouting and
Freemasonry, Two Parallel Associations".
W.Bro Tony Harvey P.Pr.G.Reg, Pr.G.Mentor (Derby)
gave a very detailed and interesting talk on the history of
Scouts with particular reference to the part played by the
Founder
Lord Baden Powell and his very close association with many
very
prominent Freemasons. There was great emphasis on the part
played by
the Scouts within the community at the moment and how there
membership
was now growing after a period of stagnation and their
approach
could well benefit Freemasonry.
There were over fifty Masons attending, including our
Provincial
Grand Master, Rt.W.Bro.Michael Penny, the Assistant P.G.M.
W.Bro.Colin Gale,
Past Asst P.G.M. W.Bro.Derek Webber , several Acting
Provincial Officers and
twelve members of the Scout Lodge, non Masonic scouts were
admitted to hear
the
lecture.
As our Worshipful Master W.Bro.Brian Pepperrell was in
hospital, his chair was
ably filled by W.Bro. Ken Temple, aged 92. Everyone expressed
concern over the
Masters health.
|
W.Bro.Basil Ashling provided a very tasty five course dinner
ably assisted
by W.Bro.Alan Guest. The raffles raised a substantial sum
which was donated
to the Lecturers chosen charities.
A worthwhile evening was had by all.

Two Assistant Provincial Grand Masters for 421 ! |
|
|
Two Assistant Provincial Grand Masters in the same lodge -
it must be unusual if not unique.
W.Bro Colin Richards was initiated into the Loyal Lodge of
Industry No. 421, South Molton, Devonshire on the 5th of
April 1977 and W.Bro Richard Speed was initiated into the
same lodge on 3rd June 1980. They were then advanced into
the Fortescue Lodge of Mark Master Masons No.9 during the
early eighties; these lodge meet in the same building.
Both brethren, having held high office in the two degrees.
W.Bro Richards was appointed APGM of the Mark Master Masons
on the 23rd September 2006 ( retired 6th October 2012) and
W.Bro Speed was appointed APGM of the Craft in Devonshire on
16th April 2012.
They had not met until they joined the craft and over time,
not only are they Masonic brothers, but have become very great
friends.

The Dart Lodge aids Prostate Cancer Appeal |
|
|
 |
After the October meeting of the Dart Lodge No 2641, the
brethren were joined by their wives for a social evening. At
this gathering, there was a talk by two ladies from the
Dartmouth Medical Practice. Margaret Rogers and Sharon Hart
talked about their proposed walk “Along the Great Wall of
China” in March 2013. This walk is to raise money for
Prostate Cancer. They gave a day by day account of the trip,
of their proposed village hotels, meals and the miles they
are to cover each day. They hope to ascend the Heavenly
Staircase during this walk. The talk was interjected with
humorous comments and questions from the members and their
wives. After a meal and a draw, the ladies were presented
with a cheque for £350 by the Master W Bro Lloyd Scribbins.
A most enjoyable evening was had by all.

Miles Coverdale Lodge donate over £1,000 to Rowcroft
Hospice |
|
|
 |
On Thursday 18 October 2012 Miles Coverdale Lodge held a
charity event. After the regular meeting was closed wives,
partners and guests were welcomed into the Temple in
Courtland Road, Paignton by the Master, W.Bro. Peter
Perryman (pictured far right) and members. W.Bro. James
Lang, the Charity Steward (pictured far left), gave a talk
on the scope of Masonic charities. He covered the national,
provincial and individual lodge charitable activities and
explained the total giving to good works by the Masonic
community was the largest single group giving in the nation,
with only the National Lottery distributing more. James
highlighted the national contribution to international (e.g.
tsunami relief) and domestic good works (e.g. youth
programmes); the provincial Masonic charities giving to good
causes in Devon (e.g. Riding for the Disabled Torquay as
proposed by the lodge); and Miles Coverdale’s giving to
local good causes ranging from Age Concern Torbay to Friends
of Torbay and Paignton hospitals. The principal guests in
the Temple were Sue Newman (Chair) (pictured 4th from left)
and Chris Hicks (trustee) (pictured 2nd from left) both from Rowcroft Hospice. They gave a presentation on the work of
Rowcroft Hospice which supports people with progressive,
life limiting conditions across |
South Devon and last year
cared for over 1,800 local people. We learned that, from its
centre in Torquay, Rowcroft supports patients and their
families across a 300 square mile area which stretches from
Dartmoor to Dawlish, out as far as Bovey Tracey and
Moretonhampstead. Patients receive specialist care in the
hospice’s 17 bedded inpatient unit or in their homes, cared
for by Rowcroft’s community and Hospice at Home teams.
Rowcroft has to raise over £5 million every year, of which
70% must come from the public’s generosity. It was with
great pleasure that Mrs. Jill Perryman (pictured 3rd from
left) presented Sue Newman with £1,000 being the proceeds
from the Ladies' Night and other lodge funds with further
funds raised and presented later that evening. It is to be
hoped that, among the many calls on our giving, lodges in
the Rowcroft catchment area consider the continuing needs of
the Hospice movement in their area which is so dependent on
public support. This may be easier in the coming years now
that our wonderful support for the Devon Festival Appeal for
the Royal Masonic Trust For Girls And Boys is coming to a
successful conclusion.

The WAKE Fund supporting young people |
|
|
It was at the WAKE Fund dispersment meeting in April 2010
that with an application initiated by Victory Lodge No. 4189
a some of money was awarded to 2312 (Tavistock) Squadron,
Plymouth and Cornwall Wing of the Air Training Corps.
The money was used to purchase three kayaks, paddles and
spray decks. The Dagger “Element” kayaks each have a sticker
saying “Donated By Local Freemesons” they are slightly
longer and more stable than some kayaks, which makes them
ideal for beginners or those less confident.
The picture features three Cadets and BCU Coach W.Bro. Andy
Vodden MBE PPrSGW on a kayaking weekend at Roadford
Reservoir.
We all know how good the WAKE Fund is at supporting local
charities and the stickers display the visible support we
give to young people.

St. Margaret's Lodge gets younger! |
|
|
At
a recent Initiation Ceremony at St. Margaret’s Lodge,
Topsham the newer members of the Lodge took over and showed
the Past Masters that the future of Masonry is in good
hands.Under the watchful-eye of the Worshipful Master,
W.Bro. Peter Wilkins, the Initiation of our new member Bro.
Sam Cunningham took place with Bro. Colin Libby (SD)
delivering the Entrusting, Bro. Phil Bellamy, (a re-joining
member who had moved away from the area due to work
commitments) then debuted on the floor with his delivery of
the Working Tools and Bro. Patrick Morris (Stwd) delivered
the Exhortation. Bro Morris had previously contacted the
Provincial website and asked to join a Lodge near to his
home (he was a Norfolk Mason). Living only two miles from
Topsham, the Webmaster (!) made sure he joined his nearest
Lodge and on the night in question he not only did his first
piece of ritual (The Exhortation), he also stood in as Lodge
Organist! The Lodge is now looking forward to its next
meeting which again is an Initiation, this time of a Lewis
(son of a Mason) which is the fourth one in the Lodge, which
goes to show that we must be doing something right!

Recruitment Teams go Province wide |
|
|
 |
 |
|
|
The Recruitment Trailer was put to good
use recently at the Kingsbridge Agricultural Show 2012 where
it supported the Brethren of Duncombe Lodge No. 1486 in
presenting the public with a opportunity to find out a
little more about the Freemasons of Devonshire and promote
not only the Lodge but also our donations to local
charities.
The photograph (right) shows those brethren who attended and
gave their help on the day :
W.Bro Bill Grahamslaw & W.Bro Barney Greenhill of The
Duncombe Lodge No.1486 and also W.Bro Gordon Cook of The
Tormohun Lodge 6449 and W.Bro John Pritchard of The Victory
Lodge No.4189
We must thank them all, for their time and effort in
ensuring that we had a physical presence at the show and
whilst most of the interest came from members of local
Lodges there was also plenty of curiosity shown from the
general public. Amazingly, there was also a lot of
interest from Brethren and their families on holiday from
other Provinces! This only goes to show that the
Trailer and it’s support Team can make an impact and more
importantly will encourage more people to understand the
good works that we do.
On the same day, the Recruitment Tent was being manned by W.
Bro Graham Snell of the Lodge of Harmony, Nigel Davey of St.
Margaret's Lodge No. 6128 and W Bro. David Bennett of Vale
of Haldon Lodge (who is the Recruitment Committee Secretary)
at Darts Farm Topsham on the occasion of the 20th
Anniversary event of the Devon Air Ambulance
which looks like it may have attracted new members for the Topsham
Lodges. |

Devonshire Freemasons give big boost to Devon Air Ambulance |
|
|
Devonshire Freemasons have presented the Devon Air Ambulance
Trust with a grant of £4000 from their national charity, The
Freemasons’ Grand Charity. The generous donation is part of
the total figure of over £1 million donated by the Charity
since 2007, providing funding to every Air Ambulance in
England and Wales.
Air Ambulances save the lives of thousands of people every
year by getting paramedics or doctors to patients in
emergency situations, as quickly as possible. These rescue
services operate almost entirely from donations from
charities such as The Freemasons’ Grand Charity, as well as
the general public.
Speaking about the donation Helena Holt, Chief Executive of
Devon Air Ambulance Trust said: ‘We are delighted to once
again be supported by the Grand Charity. Donations such as
this really do make a huge difference to the Charity and we
would like to take this opportunity to thank them.’ She
added ‘Our service knows no boundary. It doesn’t matter if
you are young or old, resident or holidaymaker, we’re here
for anyone who needs us.’
Speaking about the donation V.W.Bro Ian Kingsbury, Deputy
Provincial Grand Master, Devonshire, who presented the
cheque on behalf of the Provincial Grand Master R.W.Bro.
Michael Penny said: |

“Devon Freemasons are delighted to hear that the total
figure donated is now over
£1 million. We are proud to be able to provide this level of
support for such important services. Devon Air Ambulance
Trust plays a vital role in our community and they are
always in need of support. Helping local projects and
services is important to Freemasons, which these donations
demonstrate.”

The annual match between the two Provinces for the

the match was held in a spirit of fraternal friendship and
charities supported by both teams will benefit. The picture

Torbay Masonic Widow’s Association |
|
|
 |
On Wednesday 27th June, sixteen ladies from the Torbay
Masonic Widow’s Association took a coach trip up the lovely
Teign Valley, past Cannonteign Falls. To the “hidden” Garden
Tea Shop in Dunsford for a coffee, warm scones and cream -
and the Lemon Drizzle cake was perfect! Unfortunately,
minutes after finding tables and chairs in the garden, it
started to rain, so they all had to make their way to the
tables undercover. This however, did not spoil the morning.
Then back on the “Lucky Sun” coach for a ride up the lanes
to Fingle Bridge, where we all had a very pleasant lunch,
beside the fast flowing River Teign, which had been swollen
by the recent rains. Our final stop was at the Bovey Tracy
Craftsman’s Guild Shop, where the ladies enjoyed looking at
all the ceramics, photos and woodware.
Marjorie Horn, the Secretary was congratulated and thanked
for organising such a lovely day out.

Bishop Surtees Lodge No 8497 Celebrate 6 Candidates
in 10 Months! |
|
|
In May 2011 Bishop Surtees Lodge No. 8497, meeting at
Topsham, held a “White Table” evening. Their June 2012
meeting saw the culmination of the success of that event
when they Initiated their sixth Candidate in ten months in
the presence of the Assistant Provincial Grand Master,
W.Bro. Peter J.M. Keaty, PSGD.
Double ceremonies in October 2011 and January 2012 saw Bros.
Alan Songhurst, Benny Benstead, Malcolm Fairley and Graham
Nicholls Initiated. Bro. Ross Cottey was Initiated in
February 2012 and finally, on 15th June 2012, Bro. Terry
Rose completed the list. The Lodge also has 2 Fellow Crafts
who will be Raised at the next meeting in September. This is
a tremendous boost for the future of the Lodge which ten
years ago had to “recycle” Past Masters. It is virtually a
20% increase in membership and shows the value of events
such as a “White Table” evening for promoting Freemasonry.
Combined with receiving a Grand Patron Certificate, for the
2012 Festival, for the Royal Masonic Trust for Girls and
Boys presented by Assistant Provincial Grand Master, W.Bro. Peter Keaty.
June 15th was a very memorable evening for Worshipful
Master, his team of Officers and Brethren of the lodge. |

Provincial meetings of Old! |
|
|
The photograph shows a room prepared for a Provincial Grand
Lodge meeting and was submitted by the Provincial Curator,
Richard Ebrey. He said "It was generously donated to the
Province but we don't know a great deal about it,
unfortunately. It clearly shows a room before a meeting of
the Provincial Grand Lodge, with the individual banners of
the Provincial Grand Master, his Deupty and Assistant(s),
but we don't know where it was taken. The first Assistant
PGM in Devonshire was appointed in 1920, so it must be after
that, but we can't date it any more precisely at the
moment."
If you recognise the venue, or can date it more precisely,
please let the Webmaster know who will pass on your answers.
Any information regarding the banners would also be
gratefully received!
Also pictured below is a photograph of the Provincial Grand
Tyler of Devonshire, taken by JF Long, whose studio was in
High Street, Exeter (circa 1860-1903). All that can be
determined by his regalia is that he was a member of St John
the Baptist Lodge (39) as he's wearing their centenary
jewel. Although not permitted now, he's also wearing jewels
of other Masonic orders, which was common in the 19th
century. Additionally, it is supposed that his Tyler's
apron was the property of the Province, it displaying
neither rosettes nor levels, thus suitable for any Brother.
The Provincial Curator believes the collar jewel being worn
is that which is currently used by the Provincial Tyler and
dates to the 1890s. Can anyone offer any more information,
please? |

Masonic Support is a Knockout! |

Pictured above is E.Comp. Bob Munro the HRA Provincial
Charity Steward presenting a cheque for £1,000 on behalf of
the HRH in particular and Masons in Devon in general, to a
gym in Plymouth where they aim is to get young children off
the street and take up sport. The gym needed boxing
equipment suitable for young children and Vic McGinnes of St
John 1247 asked the Holy Royal Arch and local Lodges to lend
their support.
Although the HRA promoted the project, St John’s Lodge No.
1247, Unity Chapter 1247 and the Mark Degree also supported
the fundraising to enable the presentation to the club.
There are already a number of children under 12 yrs.
benefiting from the programme and the membership list is
growing weekly which justifies our support.

Torbay Lodge No. 1358 celebrates its 1500th meeting |
|
|
 |
 |
On 29th May 2012 Torbay Lodge No. 1358 celebrated its 1500th
meeting. We were honoured by the attendance of almost all of
the Provincial Executive lead by our PGM Rt W Bro M T Penny.
The business of the evening was conducted as swiftly as
possible and W Bro Roger Watson the lodge Mentor was invited
to make a presentation entitled 'Masonry in General and
Torbay Lodge in Particular from 1772 to the Present.' It was
clear from the excellence of the talk that W Bro Watson had
spent a lot of time researching the subject and we all
learnt many historical facts about Masory in Torbay and
beyond. Hopefully in the near future W Bro Watson can record
his researches into a printed format to ensure that our long
history is recorded for future generations of Torbay masons.
The PGM also presented a Grand Patron's Certificate to the
lodge for the money so far raised towards the 2012 Festival.
The Temple and refectory at Courtland Road have an upper
limit of 80 people and by some miracle of good fortune this
was the exact number present! The Festive Board was
extremely convivial if somewhat cramped and noisy, but a
good time was had by all. The speeches were all amusing,
well delivered and of just the right length! In fact the
entire evening was very enjoyable and memorable.
The raffle at the Festive Board raised £317.00 and this
amount will be rounded up to £500.00 out of our charity fund
and will go towards the 2012 Festival fund.
The pictures show Rt W Bro M T Penny presenting the Grand
Patron's Certificate to the WM Bro Robert Adams, with the
Charity Steward W Bro Stan Westmoreland looking on.
Also a group photograph of the distinguished brethren
present together with officers of Torbay Lodge 1358, this is
unique by virtue of the number of Active Provincial Officers
assembled at any lodge other than at a Provincial Lodge
Meeting.

Devon Hospices receive over £13,000 from Masonic
Donations |
|
|
 |
Local hospices have welcomed funding from The Freemasons’
Grand Charity - a total of over £13000 is being donated to 5
hospices in Devon. Adult and children’s hospices across
England and Wales are receiving £600,000 in total from the
Charity. In Plymouth, St. Luke’s Hospice has received £3840.
This grant is in addition to funds already donated by local
Freemasons, who raise thousands of pounds for charity every
year.
Freemasons have a long tradition of funding hospices, with
The Freemasons’ Grand Charity donating £9.3 million
nationwide since 1984. All donations are raised by
Freemasons and their families and aim to assist hospices in
their vital role in helping those affected by terminal or
life limiting illness.
Nina Wearne, Senior Community Fundraiser said:
“Without the tireless support of those individuals and
organisations who give so much of their time to raising
funds for St. Luke’s Hospice we could not continue to
provide our care to so many families. We are very grateful
to The Freemasons’ Grand Charity for their continued support
for St. Luke’s Hospice, and to the local Masonic groups who
raise vital funds to support our work. |
On presenting them with their cheques W.Bro. Nick Ball, an
Assistant Provincial Grand Master for Devonshire, said:
“Supporting hospice services remains very important to
Freemasons in Devon and we are delighted that The
Freemasons’ Grand Charity has continued to provide this
funding this year. The care provided by local hospices is
exceptional – but continuous financial support is necessary
to ensure such a dedicated service. For that reason we are
delighted to be able to demonstrate our continued commitment
to their cause”.

Erme Lodge's Chaplain hands over after 27 years |
|
|
After 59 years of unstinting service to
Freemasonry, 92 year old W Bro Ken Spargo retired as Chaplain
of Erme Lodge 1091.
The Master, Officers and Brethren paid tribute to him and
thanked him for the last 27 years as their Chaplain.
W Bro Ken was initiated into the Erme lodge on 1st of April
1953 and was passed and raised the following 2 months. Ken
was made a Steward of the lodge in 1958 in the heady days
when there were 16 Stewards on the list. In 1962 Ken was
promoted to Assistant Secretary and in 1963 he took the
collar of Almoner. From there the progress was rapid with
the offices of Junior Deacon in 1964, straight to Junior
Warden in 1965 and thence to Senior Warden in 1966. Ken was
installed in the Chair of King Solomon in 1967.
After continued service to his Mother Lodge, Erme 1091, and
Freemasonry in general; W Bro Ken was appointed Provincial
Grand Standard Bearer in 1976. In 1985 He was appointed
Chaplain of the lodge and in the same year was appointed
Past Provincial Superintendant of Works, followed in 1995 by
promotion to Past Provincial Grand Warden.
Worshipful Brother Spargo has been an inspiration to
countless |
 |
numbers of Masons and has to the writer’s
knowledge only missed 3 Ceremonies in his 59 years. He
regularly attends lodge of instruction and is an experienced ritualist with a ready acquiescence to help a Brother. He is
always cheerful and is a most dedicated man with the rarely
seen charm of the “True Gentleman” he is much venerated
within his own lodge and respected throughout the Province
of Devonshire.

W.Bro Eric Soper PPrJGW - 70 year certificate
presentation |
|
|
|
On the 15th March 2012, the Provincial
Grand Master Michael T Penny visited The Earl of Mount Edgcumbe Lodge No.3924 to help celebrate
the 70 years of service
to Freemasonry by W.Bro Eric Thomas Soper PPrJGW. Also
present were three of the Assistant Provincial Grand
Masters, six Grand Officers and six active Provincial Grand
Officers.
The Provincial Grand Master paid tribute to W.Bro Eric Soper
with a presentation that contained an account of his Private
life and Masonic career, which was made with detail,
humility and sincerity.
W.Bro Eric Soper a Lewis was born on 17.08.1921 making him
90 years old. He was the son of Thomas Henry Soper, an
Accountant, who was a joining member (joined 17th July 1919)
of The Earl of Mount Edgcumbe Lodge at the 3rd meeting of
the Lodge.
He was initiated at an Emergency meeting on Monday 23rd
March 1942 at the age of 20 as he was a Wireless Mechanic in
the Royal Air Force and was to be posted to Malta. His
father proposed him and was seconded by W.Bro Martin G Endle.
He was passed (17th Feb 1944) and raised (4th May 1944) at
the United Brethren Lodge No1923 in Valletta Malta. After
returning from the War Eric was appointed as a Steward of
Lodge in June 1947 progressing through all the Office’s and |
 |
 |
becoming Worshipful Master for the first time in
June1955. The PGM RW Bro Bishop Surtees presiding on that
occasion.
Ten years after becoming Worshipful Master, Eric was
appointed PrGStwd in 1965, followed by
promotion to PPrGD in 1967 and PPrJGW in 1974.
Eric was in regular attendance after being Worshipful Master
and became the Lodge Chaplain for first time in 1971 - an
Office held for 5 years. After gap of 23 years Eric became
Lodge Chaplain for second time in June 1999 for a period of
one year, when he was then installed as Worshipful Master
for second time in June 2000 by W.Bro MW Eglinton PSGD.
Since that installation Eric has been in regular attendance
and when called upon has filled in occasionally mainly as
IPM or Chaplain and has been Installing Warden at several
Installation meetings.
He was exalted into the HRA in October 1944, at the
Resurrection Chapter in Malta. This was to be his only
Chapter meeting until he became a joining member of the

DPrGM presented the out going Master, W.Bro Norman Minto
with a Lodge Patrons Certificate to mark the contribution
the St. Margaret's Lodge has made to the 2012 Festival in
aid of the RMTGB. After, W.Bro Minto installed his
successor, W.Bro Peter Wilkins into the Chair of the Lodge.
For W.Bro. Wilkins, this was his third time in the Chair of
St. Margaret's (a record for Devon?) which I am sure would
have made his father, who was a founder of the Lodge very
proud.

Masonic Fishing |
|
|
|
The Masonic Fishing Charity has now formed a Devonshire
Branch with its first meeting planned for later this year.
This is a new and exciting venture which will see Devonshire
Freemasons working in the local community to provide an
interactive fishing and outdoor experience for people with
special needs. Events will be held throughout the year at
which participants are introduced on a on a one-to-one basis
to their fishing guide for the day who involves them as much
as possible with the casting, playing and landing of the
fish. Fishing tackle and all health and safety equipment is
provided free of charge as is a light lunch and refreshments
for each participant and carer. All participants receive a
certificate of confidence to take home at the end of the day
as well as other prizes for biggest fish caught etc. This is
far more than just a day’s fishing though! It enables
disadvantaged people to participate and experience something
that may otherwise be unavailable to them and it enables the
volunteers to give back to the community and have some fun
along the way. The events are funded mainly by donations
from Freemasons and there is no charge to participants,
their organisations or volunteers. So if you would like to
assist this very worthwhile charity as a caster/helper or if
you would like to serve on the branch committee please check
out

W Bro Cliff Heard PPrJGW - 50
years a Freemason |
|
|
 |
On Wednesday 22nd February 2012, Assistant Provincial Grand
Master, W Bro Colin Gale, visited the Lord Roborough Lodge
No 5789 in Plymouth to present the Provincial Grand Master's
certificate to W Bro Clifford Henry Heard PPrJGW. This
presentation marked his 50 years as a Freemason and took
place at the meeting on the 50th anniversary of W Bro
Heard’s raising to the sublime degree of a Master Mason.
W Bro Gale gave an eloquent description of W Bro Heard’s
life from being evacuated to Staffordshire in the war,
through his national service and playing cricket for
Plymouth Cricket Club, to his marriage almost 50 years ago
and the setting up of his own menswear business which he
still manages today with no thought of retirement.
W Bro Heard was initiated into the Lord Roborough Lodge No
5789 on 22nd November 1961, passed on 24th January 1962; and
raised on 28th February 1962. He was appointed and invested

Devon Hospices receive over £13,000 from the Grand
Charity |
|
|
Local hospices have welcomed funding
from The Grand Charity - a total of over £13000 is being
donated to 5 hospices in Devon. Adult and children’s
hospices across England and Wales are receiving £600,000 in
total from the Charity. In North Devon, the North Devon
Hospice and the Children’s Hospice South West (Little Bridge
House) have each received nearly £2000. These grants are in
addition to funds already donated by Devonshire Mason, who
raise thousands of pounds for charity every year.
Freemasons have a long tradition of funding hospices, with
The Grand Charity donating £9.3 million nationwide since
1984. All donations are raised by Freemasons and their
families and aim to assist hospices in their vital role in
helping those affected by terminal or life limiting illness.
Community Fundraiser for Children’s Hospice South West,
Paula Hullett, said:
“Without the tireless support of those individuals and
organisations who give so much of their time to raising
funds for Children’s Hospice South West, we could not
continue to provide our care to so many families with
life-limited children at Little Bridge House. We are very
grateful to The Freemasons’ Grand Charity for |
 |
their continued support for the
hospice, and to the local Masonic groups who raise vital
funds to support our work. This generous gift will help us
make the most of short and precious lives for families
visiting Little Bridge House.”
Trusts and Grants Fundraiser for North Devon Hospice, Azey
Siddiqui, said: “This is a fantastic award from The
Freemasons Grand Charity. It will translate into specialist
care for local people and their families facing the impact
of cancer and other life limiting illnesses. The continuing
support North Devon Hospice receives from The Freemasons’
Grand Charity, and from local Masonic lodges, helps us to
support people in their own homes as well as at Deer Park.
We are only able to deliver our specialist care to local
people thanks to the generosity of our dedicated North Devon
community. On behalf of all our patients, volunteers and
staff, we are very grateful.”
On presenting them with their cheques W.Bro. Ian Kingsbury,
the Deputy Provincial Grand Master for Devonshire said:
“Supporting hospice services remains very important to
Freemasons in Devon and we are delighted that The Grand
Charity has continued to provide this funding this year. The
care provided by local hospices is exceptional – but
continuous financial support is necessary to ensure such a
dedicated service. For that reason we are delighted to be
able to demonstrate our continued commitment to their
cause”.

Community Fundraiser for Children’s Hospice South West,
Paula Hullett said:” "This bundle of cuddly bears is such a
wonderful gift for children coming to stay with us at Little
Bridge House – for the poorly children and also for their
brothers and sisters. This is a really special gesture of
loving care and has put a smile on all our faces."
W.Bro. Kingsbury said “We are pleased to be able to provide
these Teddies to Hospices and the A&E departments of our 4
major hospitals, for staff to give to children who are in
distress and where the staff feel that a soft cuddly teddy
will help alleviate the stress and assist them in their
work”
Since the Teddies for Loving Care (TLC) scheme started over
900,000 have been distributed, by Freemasons, nationwide. In
Devonshire over 12000 have been provided to date.

Prestonian Lecture |
|
|
On Tuesday the 7th February, Torbay Masters Lodge 8227, were
honoured with a visit from the Prestonian Lecturer for 2011 W.Bro Dr. James Campbell
PhD FSA PAGSuptWks.
The Lodge was treated to a very clear and concise history of
Sir Christopher Wren, in the lecture entitled " Was Sir
Christopher Wren a Freemason?". Several times we were
shown proof that he was, only to have those proofs
contradicted minutes later!! It would appear that the "jury
is still out" but there seems to be convincing proofs that
he was a member.
The Lecture was attended by W.Bro.Nicholas Ball P.J.G.D and
W.Bro.Colin Gale P.G.StdB both Assistant Provincial Grand
Masters and various visiting Masters.
Everyone agreed that it had been a most interesting and
informative evening.

Fifty Years a member of Rose Croix |
|
|
 |
Most of us have heard of someone who has been
in Freemasonry for 50 years these days, but how many of us
know someone who has been in a side degree, especially Rose
Croix , for 50 years?
This was the occasion that was celebrated by André Potier of
St. Swithin Chapter No. 115 at their October meeting. André
was perfected into St. Swithin Chapter on 11th October 1961
at the Masonic Centre, Queen Anne’s Walk, Barnstaple after
having been raised in Braunton Lodge in April 1957. He
subsequently moved to Ruislip and joined Trinity Chapter
where he made rapid progress through all the offices to
Sovereign. In 1967, six years after his perfection, he
received his 30°. In 1969 he became Prelate of Trinity
Chapter and continued in that office for a remarkable 35
years, only missing three meetings through illness. He
received his 31° in 1980 and his 32° in 1999. André was
appointed Prelate to St. Swithin Chapter in 1994 and still
continues in that office. The picture shows Ill.Bro.

General for Devonshire, V.Ill. Bro. Michael St.J. French.

Sir Joshua Reynolds Lodge No. 4782 - Not for the
Weightwatchers! |
|
|
 |
The Sir Joshua Reynolds Lodge No 4782 held its annual Burns
Night to the immortal memory of Rabbie Burns (1759 – 1796)
on Tuesday 24th January 2012, when 50 brethren and invited
guests were present to witness a working of the Initiation
Ceremony within the Temple, followed by the traditional
festive fare in the refectory.
The evening started with W.Bro. Rod Burnett standing outside
the Lodge building to practice with his bagpipes and all
brethren arriving to the stirring ‘Flower of Scotland’
sounding out across the ‘Ridgeway’. Even the locals came out
to appreciate the lovely music.
W.Bro. Denis Compton led his officers through an enjoyable
ceremony but the anticipation of what was to follow, always
kept everyone on their toes.
With the assistance of the Officers of The St. Andrew Lodge
No. 4276 on their fraternal visit the festive board was
conducted in the time honoured way, starting with the
Selkirk Grace and the bagpipes of W.Bro. Rod Burnett, who
went on to give the ‘Address To A Haggis’ saluted with a
drop of the hard stuff!
Traditional Scottish Broth with Parsley Dumplings, Haggis,
Tatties and Neeps, Roast Beef and Vegetables, Typsy Laird,
Cheese and Bannocks with Coffee completed the whole
occasion. |
All whisky was provided courtesy of the generous bequests
from W.Bro. F.N. Adams, W. Bro. S. Hasney, W.Bro. S. Stone
PPrGSwdB, W.Bro. G Harris, PPrJGW and W.Bro. K.R. Coombes
PPrJGW. The evening was completed with the Tyler’s Toast:
Brethren hear the noble truth that Robbie Burns has told
etc., and with very full stomachs we all agreed a very
successful evening spent in memory of a very special poet
and Mason.

documented locally and many people have benefited from its

Royal Naval Lodge Double Initiation |
|
|
|
 |
At our January meeting, we in The Royal Naval
Lodge no.3337, after close consultation with The Provincial
Grand Master, had the extremely rare privilege of performing
a double initiation. It was a very special occasion for
father and son, Roger and Martyn Lakey, being the third and
fourth generation of their family to become Freemasons.
The ceremony was carried out in a most excellent manner by
W.Bro.Dougie Rogers, the Worshipful Master and ably assisted
by his officers, in the presence of W.Bro. Colin Gale.
P.G.Std.B. Asst.P.G.M. and W.Bro.Colin Barrett. P.J.G.D. the
Lodge's V.G.O
Brothers Roger and Martyn said " That they were completely
overwhelmed with the whole occasion, it was so special, that
they would treasure the memory for the rest of their lives".
Martyn said to his Father, "We are now brothers" to which
Roger replied, "You better let me tell your Mother when we
get home."
W.Bro. Dougie Rogers is to my knowledge probably the only
mason in the Province, not only to carry out a double
initiation of a father and son in the Craft, as the
Worshipful Master, but also a double Exaltation of a
different father and son in the Holy Royal Arch as the
Chapter's First Principal. |
