A Mason for the High Jump

A manager who works for me asked me if I was interested in doing a charity jump for Holiday 4 Heroes as he is the area organiser. I looked into the charity and it is a spin off from Help 4 Heroes, but it provides immediate respite breaks for serviceman and families by giving them breaks. (more info at www.holiday4eroes.co.uk ) Listening to my manager Roy Blunt who deals with the charity the work that is carried out and the things that are given to needy cases is fantastic. It provides these breaks immediately and helps  to deal with whatever has happened to the individual directly or indirectly to love ones and family.
I recieved donations and sponsorship from friends, business associates and employees and raised £1000 ( Thank you to everyone) In the current climate I am delighted with the support received. Not really nervous and strangely looking forward to it, on the day my wife and two daughters came with me to Dunkerswell Airfield and experienced the day with me. Nerve’s didn’t kick in until I sat at the door of the plane and then it was to late !!!
A very professionally run day as you would expect with the Red Devils and I had total confidence and trust in them and in particular my  instructor who I was strapped to Lt Cpl Phil Webley. The weather was superb and we jumped at 13000 feet free falling to 5000 feet when I am glad to say the chute opened. Incredible views of the coast. What an exhilarating experience if anyone gets the opportunity I would recommend to do it.

A Double First at St. John’s Lodge, No. 70

The W.M. of St. John’s Lodge, No. 70, W. Bro. Ian C. Scriviner flanked by
Bro. David Charles Cann and Bro. Christopher James Cann relaxing at the festive board on the evening of their initiation.
W.Bro. N. White, PPrAGDC, D.C.; W.Bro. A. Fowkes, PPrAGDC, ADC;
Bro. P. Fowkes, SD and Bro. P. Manning, JD carrying their new wands together
with W.Bro. R. Bray, PAGDC, PrG.Chap. and W.Bro. P. J. Keaty, PAGDC, PrGDC
Thursday 3rd June 2010 was a unique meeting in the annals of St. John’s Lodge, No. 70.  Brethren at the meeting witnessed a double first of unusual proportions. The first ‘first’ of the evening was a double first in the usual sense of the word but which carried a uniqueness all of its own, the second ‘first’ was simply something which had never before taken place in ‘70’ (or, at least, had never been minuted).
The first ‘first’ was the initiation of Bro. D. C. Cann and Bro. C. J. Cann – father and son in the profane world –brothers in Freemasonry, who were initiated together at their own request. The two were admitted and obligated separately, thus allowing Bro. C. J. Cann the privilege of becoming a Lewis, and for the rest of the ceremony they travelled the Masonic path together.  Not only was this the first time the Lodge had worked a double ceremony this century, it was the first time in its 251-year history that a father and son had been initiated on the same day!
The second ‘first’ was the Dedication and Presentation of a set of new Wands, purchased in memory of W. Bro. David J. Mills, PPrJGW, under whose inspiration and guidance the Lodge’s 250th Celebrations had been born. These were for the use of the Director of Ceremonies, the Assistant Director of Ceremonies, the Senior and Junior Deacons. Up to this time, the Lodge had relied on using wands supplied as part of the ‘furniture’ of whichever Temple in which it has met.  W. Bro. Raymond L. Bray, PAGDC, Provincial Grand Chaplain and W. Bro. P. J. Keaty, PAGDC, Provincial Grand Director of Ceremonies gave the Brethren a fascinating and detailed talk on the origin and development of the Wand of Office from the Asherah of ancient times to the wands of the Churchwardens of today as well as their adoption and development within the ceremonies of Freemasonry.  W. Bro. Bray then blessed the Wands and all through whose hands they would pass and pronounced the Patriarchal Benediction.  W. Bro. Keaty then presented the newly blessed and dedicated Wands to the Worshipful Master, W. Bro. I. C. Scriviner who, in turn, presented them to W. Bro. N. St.J. M. White, PPrAGDC, Director of Ceremonies; W. Bro. A. J. Fowkes, PPrAGDC, Assistant Director of Ceremonies; Bro. P. J. G. Fowkes, Senior Deacon and Bro. P. A. Manning, Junior Deacon and charged them to use them as custom dictates and wield them with the skill and assiduity their offices demand.   Many visitors from Devon and Cornwall, as well as a brother from Hillcrest Lodge, No. 363, Hamilton East, New Zealand enjoyed the evening, both in the Temple and at the festive board afterwards and the evening ended in perfect harmony and sobriety at a very late hour!

Bill Seymour-Jones, PPRSuptWks, Secretary, 70.

Roll reversal at Per Mare Per Terram Lodge No. 9355

W.Bro. Mike Barfoot-Franks would never have thought that over 30 years ago when he joined the Royal Marines Band Service, that in 2010, not only would he be Installed as the Master of a Royal Marine Lodge, but that he would also appoint three Lodge Officers that in days gone-by had picked him up for a hair cut (amongst other things!)  W.Bro. Mike, who is actually a Somerset Mason travels to Exmouth to attend Per Mare Per Terram Lodge.  At his Installation 24 Somerset Masons made the journey down to witness him take the Masters Chair with a total of 126 at the Festive board. A truly momentous evening.  It just shows that Masonry not only helps to start good friendships - it keeps old friendships going too!

An exceptional night was enjoyed by all.

Personal message to all Brethren from V.W.Bro. Peter Galt

Dear Brethren,
Now that I am finally adjusting to “retirement” I would like to express my grateful thanks and appreciation to each and everyone one of you for the great kindness, courtesy and hospitality I have always experienced during the years that I have served as a member of the Executive of this Province, and for the wonderful Retirement Gifts with which I was presented both at our Provincial Grand Lodge Meeting and at the Retirement Luncheon, they were wonderful - thank you.
It has been an honour and privilege to have been able to serve this lovely Order of ours and you, as the members of this great Province of ours, in the various offices I have held over the years and I consider myself most fortunate to have been able to do so. I would like to wish our Provincial Grand Master together with my successor and all the Assistant Provincial Grand Masters every continuing happiness and success and pledge to them my unwavering support in the years that lie ahead.
Finally brethren, whilst I intend to take life a little easier now, I have no intention of vanishing from sight and hope that I will be able, from time to time, to visit you in your respective lodges, and renew and once again enjoy the pleasure of your company and the fun we always had together.  May T.G.A.O.T.U. bless you and I wish you all every continued happiness and joy.
Yours sincerely and fraternally.

W.Bro. Denis R S Rabley marks a milestone in Masonry

At the April meeting of Britannia Lodge No.4099, W Bro Denis R S Rabley was presented with a fifty year certificate by Rt. W Bro Robin Osborn, PPrGM, having regaled those present with a detailed explanation of “Den’s” methodical and measured progress in his private and Masonic life.
Den retired in 1980 as Head of Mechanical Engineering Dept
at Plymouth Polytechnic. The many Masonic offices willingly undertaken (currently Inner Guard)
with a passion to fulfil the duties “to my utmost ability” his renowned delivery of ritual is remembered with awe by Brethren fortunate to receive it.
Den’s commitment saw him return to lodge a month after triple heart by-pass surgery.
Den is also a member of the Holy Royal Arch and Rose Croix degrees. As a family man Den has been married to Kay for 65 years, they have 3 Sons 3 grandchildren and 4 great grandchildren, whom they see as often as possible.
At the festive board Den was presented with an engraved glass bowl and Britannia Lodge certificate signed by all the Brethren,
as a token of our esteem and gratitude, for being partakers in a remarkable Masonic milestone, of a truly Masonic man.
Denis reaches his 90th birthday this September.

Torbay Masonic Widows Association

Once again W.Bro Basil Ashling , IPM of the Lodge of the Seven Hills 6857 (aged 90) organised the lunch for the Torbay Masonic Widows' Association on April 21st 2010.
Twenty Eight ladies sat down to a lovely lunch, prepared by Basil in the kitchen at Courtland Road,
Paignton.
The ladies were treated to a three course meal and after a raffle was held  with the proceeds going towards the Courtland Road, building fund. These raffles are completely funded by the ladies and do not come from any monies the Association receives from
lodges.  The Chairman, Mrs.Janet Bootherstone, thanked the Liaison Officer and his wife Ann for taking the time to setup the tables in the morning and for running the bar.  The May meeting will be a talk by Mrs.Kathleen Fender, the retired Matron of Cadogan Court and in June will be talk about a train journey from Crediton to China via Mongolia by Jan Thom.  Anyone who knows of a Masonic Widow living in the Torbay Area, who might like to attend, should contact the Secretary,
Mrs. Marjorie Horn 01803 522435.
Jim Jordan our "Roving Reporter in Paignton"

Below article from the Herald Express Saturday 27th March

People are sometimes intrigued by organisations such as the Freemason's Masonic Order, wondering what kind of ceremonies take place within the architectural grandeur of these ancient buildings.
Over the years, friends and associates who are lodge members, have often spoken about the ambivalent generosity and charity work done by the Masons.... but still there remains a quiet air of mystery.  Consequently, after receiving a request from the "speaker finder" of the Torbay Masonic Widows' Association, I was more than happy to oblige. Paignton's Masonic Hall is tucked away in Courtland Road, across from the library and "reporting for duty", I was met at the door by the delightful Mrs. Isla Robertson.
Inside Jim, the Liaison Officer, kindly gave me a brief but enlightening tour of the historic building before delivering me to the ladies, where an excellent cup of coffee and biscuits awaited.  Feeling completely spoilt, the ol' sailor began to worry if a talk on Pilotage in Torbay was the correct sort of morning agenda for a room full of respectable, mature ladies! Thankfully, they seemed to warm to the collection of maritime yarns about different foreign ships visiting Torbay over the years and there were plenty of chuckles.
Dear ladies, I had a wonderful morning- I didn't win the raffle but then that would have been embarrassing(!) - my thanks for your kind attention and generous cheque that will find its way to the children's hospice.

The Province says "Cheerio" to giants on Devonshire Masonry

At a luncheon held at the Dawlish Warren Hotel on the 24th April 2010 the Province said "Cheerio" to two of the most prominent figures in Devonshire Masonry.

Over a 100 guests witnessed the Provincial Grand Master pay tribute to V.W.Bro Peter Galt and W.Bro. Louis Baycock on their retirement from the active Executive.  Whilst their wives were presented with bouquets of flowers, they were presented with certain "domestic equipment" that they will no doubt need now that they will be spending the odd evening at home!

Bro. Mark Ormrod publishes his first book

As a Royal Marine, Mark Ormrod relished the prospect of a tour of duty in Afghanistan. And then the unthinkable happened. In one heart-stopping moment Mark's life was brutally shattered when a land mine tore off both his legs and his right arm. The catastrophic injuries he sustained, the race to airlift him out of danger and the shocking truth behind the doctors' battle to save him are all described in graphic detail in this remarkable memoir. This is also the story of how, on the brink of despair, Mark began the greatest battle of his life - to walk again and, using state-of-the-art 'bionic' legs, to stand shoulder to shoulder with his comrades and to receive his campaign medal. Told with brutal honesty, Marks book, "Man Down" is a searing, action-packed account of courage and comradeship, of life on the front line in the Afghan desert and the terrible legacy of war.
Mark was Initiated into the Royal Marines Plymouth Lodge last year and has become an active member ever since.

The Travels of a Provincial Senior Grand Warden

W.Bro. Alan Cockman in his role as Pr.S.G.W. kept a tally of the mileage he travelled in fulfilling his duties last year, whilst at the same time trying to raise funds for the 2012 Festival by organising a "Guess the Mileage" competition.  After 79 visits the total mileage covered by him was 8907 miles and the nearest guess, and thus the winner was G. Sawyer, who guessed 8905 miles at the Semper Fidelis Installation at Exeter on 7th December 2009.

Next closest (who doesn’t win anything - not a sausage ) was Martin Heskins who guessed 8917 miles at St. Peter’s Lodge at Tiverton on 10th February.

The Competition raised £1,342 for the 2012 Devonshire Festival.
and a big thank you to all who took part.  Alan Cockman

W.Bro. John LeBalleur PPrSGW

The Worshipful Master of Sun Lodge No.106 , W.Bro. John LeBalleur PPrSGW, was called to the Grand Lodge Above on the afternoon of Saturday the 10th April 2010 at the age of 60 years.
W.Bro. John who was born on the 16th February 1950 leaves a widow Gina who sat in the Worshipful Masters' Chair of this Lodge less than three months ago when John was Installed in the Chair of Sun Lodge No. 106 an office which he accepted gratefully when the opportunity arose. He also leaves a son, James, who lives in France and a daughter Yvette who lives locally together with their children all of whom he was extremely proud.

John was initiated into The Lodge of Concord No.1135 meeting at Ilfracombe on 12th January 1983 some 27 years ago and was Master of that Lodge in 1994/5. He was a very keen and dedicated member of that Lodge and served the office of Treasurer for many years.
After moving to the Exmouth area in connection with his Police career he regularly attended the Sun Lodge and WB David Greenaway had the pleasure of proposing him when he became a Joining member on 10th April 1989. He has served this Lodge well over the last 11 years undertaking the offices of Charity Steward, Treasurer, Chairman of the Sun Lodge Charity Association and of course Worshipful Master.  He was promoted to the rank of Provincial Senior Grand Deacon on 26th April 2003, Provincial Junior Grand Warden on 22nd April 2006 and Past Provincial Senior Grand Warden the following year.
John also had many other interests in his life:   He worked tirelessly for Sea Bass Protection in which capacity he travelled extensively around this country and many other European countries collection data, giving talks and being present at meetings at Government and Ministerial level.  He was an avid DIY enthusiast and undertook projects with the confidence of a professional. The latest being a project to virtually rebuild the house in which he and Gina were living at the time of his death.  He was very socially minded and enjoyed many outings with the 106 Brethren, which will never be quite the same again.
He was also the Treasurer of the Culver Shooting Club and it was in this capacity that he and W.Bro. Chris Methven were undertaking the task of clearing up after the season when he passed away. Our feelings must go out to W.Bro. Chris at this time having been in that unenviable position.
Our feelings must also go out to Gina, James, Yvette and the grand children at this time and I am sure Gina, in particular, will need all our support in the weeks and months to come.  John was a first class Mason, a first class family man and a first class bloke. We will miss him.

John's funeral took place at 2.30pm at All Saints Church, Exeter Road, Exmouth on Friday 23rd April 2010

Being Initiated by the Worshipful Master, W.Bro. T. Coleman PAGDC was Bro. Robert Crowter-Jones (21), he was assisted by Robert's father, Junior Warden Bro. Nigel Crowter-Jones (55) and the ceremony was witnessed by Robert's Grandfather, Bro. John Crowter-Jones (85), thus proving Masonry is timeless and can truly span the generations!

Holy Royal Arch Bowls them over!

Helping with funds towards the refurbishment of Exmouth Cricket ground and as part of the NatWest CricketForce initiative, Devonshire Holy Royal Arch Masons recently donated £1000 to help buy a new set of all weather cricket nets, enabling younger members of the club to practice all year round.  Over the years the club has had strong links with the Craft as their members have included  W.Bro John Tozer and long term opening batsmen, Rt.W.Bro. Ken Alford amongst others.

Pictured on the leg side of the cheque is E.Comp. Chris Pengelly M.E. Grand Superintendent and E.Comp. Bob Munro Provincial Charity Steward.  On the off side is Club President Ron Crabb and Club Chairman Peter Langford.

Most. W.Bro. Rt Hon Lord Cornwallis, OBE, DL

The death on 6 March of Lord Cornwallis breaks a chain of more than one hundred years of continuous distinguished service to Freemasonry by the Cornwallis family.
Fiennes Neil Wykham, 3rd Baron Cornwallis was born in 1921, educated at Eton and served in the Coldstream Guards during the Second World War. As a Farmer of extensive orchards he served on major committees in the House of Lords and the European Commission protecting the interests of fruit growers and small businesses in general, for which he received his OBE. He was appointed a Deputy Lieutenant for Kent in 1976.
He was initiated in Douglas Lodge No. 1725, Maidstone in 1954 and was Provincial Senior Grand Warden of Kent in 1962 and Senior Grand Warden in 1963.
An interest in charity took him to the former Royal Masonic Institution for Boys, of which he was Chairman 1966 – 1972.  In 1971 he was appointed Assistant Grand Master. Shortly after, the Bagnall Committee was set up to make a fundamental review of Masonic Charity. On its report being accepted he was asked by the Grand Master to chair the Grand Master’s Committee to implement the major changes which resulted in the reorganisation of the Charities into their present form, no mean feat.

In 1976 he became Deputy Grand Master and Second Grand Principal and in 1982 succeeded the late Lord Cadogan as Pro Grand Master and Pro First Grand Principal, serving for ten years.

His period as Pro Grand Master was not an easy one. Public perceptions of the Craft, political interference, major enquiries into the compatibility of Freemasonry and Christianity by the Methodist and Anglican Churches and the problems of the former Royal Masonic Hospital took up a great deal of his time. He gave real support to the then new policy of openness (not popular at that time) and lived to see it begin to bear fruit.

After his retirement in 1992 he continued to serve on the Grand Master’s Council and his experience and wise counsel were much appreciated by his successors.

St. Margaret's Lodge Helps the Heroes

St. Margaret's Lodge No. 6128 Topsham recently held their Ladies Night Festival in the Officers Mess, at the Commando Training Centre, Lympstone.  W.Bro Bob Fletcher, the current Worshipful Master was until recently a serving Royal Marine and thus was able to secure this impressive venue.  CTCRM is so close to the Lodge that on a clear day you can almost see the Lodge from the Assault Course!

The night was the culmination in what has been a very busy year for St. Margaret's Lodge. Bob and his wife Morven decided at the beginning of the Lodge year that  "Help for Heroes" would be the main focus of the Lodge's charitable giving.  After kicking the year off with a evening cruise up the river Exe, and Bob and Morven embarking on the sponsored "Dartmoor Yomp", which traces the 30 mile route undertaken by Royal Marines under training, the night  started with a bang, as once the guests assembled on the terrace of the Mess they were treated to "Mess Beatings" by the Corps of Drums.

As St. Margaret's has in its ranks quite a number of former Royal Marine Drum Majors & Buglers, they particularly were pleased to see that the standards displayed by the Corps of Drums on the evening surpassed even what they remembered in "their day!"
The display even brought a big smile to the face of the W.M. - a former Parade Adjutant!

After the evening meal a cheque for £2000 was presented by the Worshipful Master and his wife Morven on behalf of the Lodge to Bro. Martin Lambert-Gorwyn, area organiser for "Help for Heroes".  Once the evening had finished however, and the proceeds of the raffle had been taken into consideration, the cheque was re-written to read £3,000 - a truly amazing figure!  This amount is in addition to the £10,000 St. Margaret's has donated this year to the 2012 Festival in aid of the Royal Masonic Trust for Girls and Boys which has gained the Lodge Vice Patron status.
In a few days time, our newest member, Andrew McGlynn will put away his police truncheon and will be reverting back to his Royal Marine "Yomping" days by attempting a gruelling coastal run known as the "Grizzly" in aid of "Help for Heroes".

Bro. Ron Lee - 50 years in Masonry

Ron Lee was initiated into the Lodge of Good Intention No 6927 in Barnstaple in 1956 and joined The Sun Lodge 22 years later and has now been a member of Sun Lodge for 31 years.

W.Bro. Peter Stabb Fundraising for the British Heart Foundation

W.Bro. Peter Stabb, PPrJGD, Past Master of the Sir Joshua Reynolds Lodge No. 4782 is currently President of Plympton Rotary Club. Every incoming President chooses a personal charity to support in their year of Office. Peter chose the British Heart Foundation (BHF) - an obvious choice given his appalling family history of heart disease which includes his own triple bypass (CABG) nearly 11 years ago. The BHF are supporting a new local appeal - The Derriford Hospital 3D Heart Appeal - and are hoping to raise £97,000 in 2010 to purchase a Three Dimensional scanner. All funds raised will be earmarked for this new appeal.
Looking for a personal challenge, Peter decided to walk from Plymouth to Falmouth in February 2010, which is National Heart Month, to coincide with Rotary Awareness Week and the start of the Rotary District Conference, which was being held in the town.

Then he told his wife Jan! She immediately agreed to accompany Peter and they both started planning and training in 2009.
The Trek started from the Drake Circus Shopping Mall in Plymouth City Centre at 11:00 on a wet, cold and windy Tuesday 23rd February 2010, where an enthusiastic band of friends, members of the Sir Joshua Reynolds Lodge, including the Master, W.Bro. George Campbell, members of the local branch of the British Heart Foundation, Plympton Rotarians, Rotary District Governor Ken Edmonds and the Lord Mayor and Lady Mayoress of Plymouth, Alderman and Mrs Kenneth Foster gave Peter and Jan a rousing send-off.
Peter and Jan’s daughter Laura and Rotary colleagues accompanied Peter and Jan on the first 2½ miles of the journey to the Torpoint Ferry - if only to ensure that they actually get through border security and into Cornwall!
The trek is due to end some 55 miles later, in Falmouth, on Friday 26th February 2010 (by coincidence this is also the National Wear Red Day).
W.Bro. Peter’s other big challenge for his year is to broaden the contact between Rotarians and Freemasons in the Plympton area. Something that has never happened before. He has already organised a joint social evening of dinner and cabaret and is hoping to host a charity quiz night later in the year.
At the time of writing, W.Bro. Peter Stabb has raised more than £1500 towards his target of £2000. If you would like to help Peter towards his target, either individually or through a Lodge donation, please go to www.justgiving.co.uk/peterstabb

Holy Royal Arch Provincial Grand Teddy Draw

In 2009 a very large Teddy Bear was donated to the M.E. Grand Superintendent, E.Comp Chris Pengelly, who wished it to be put into a draw to raise money to go towards the Teddy Bear scheme which was and is still running in the Craft. As you hopefully know this worthy scheme supplies little teddies to children who have for some reason or other, must spend some time in hospital.
For most youngsters quite a traumatic event, these children receive a teddy as a comforter and for those old enough to understand, a demonstration of the procedure they will receive is carried out on their teddy. This practise seems to reassure them that no harm will befall them.
The draw ran from 10th September too 7th December 2009. Unfortunately I was unable to attend every chapter in the province during that period, but very fortunate to attend most. To those I could not attend but took part in the draw, many thanks to the Scribes and charity stewards for supporting it.
To those Chapters I was able to attend I also thank you for your support and an enjoyable H.R.A. evening.
On behalf of the M.E. Grand Superintendent and myself may I thank all the companions who took part in the draw for their support and generosity.  At Sun Chapter No 106 Installation Convocation on the 7th December, the M.E.G.S. together with the newly installed Zerubbabel E. Comp, B. R. Woodman (pictured above) drew the winning ticket for Big Ted and the winner was E. Comp, M. Bennett. of The Friendship Chapter No, 202.  On completion of the draw I presented the M. E. Grand Superintendent with cheques to the total of £1,250 too his surprise. His comment was “he is always amazed at the generosity of the Companions” Not only for supporting this fund, but also local charities at the same time supporting the 2012 Festival.

Devon and Somerset Farmers Chapter – Somerset Meeting

For their annual foray over the border the Chapter this year, arranged to visit Yeovil where Chapter of Brotherly Love meet and had assisted in the arrangements for the evening.
Before the meeting opened the Scribe E read the dispensations that authorised the cross Provincial meeting.

The picture on the right shows E Comps Roger Hutchings (H), Rodney Nott (MEZ) and Philip Giorgetti (J), checking their seats prior to the start of the meeting.
The distinguished visitors included E.Comps Brian Meldon Deputy Grand Superintendent Devon, D John Bennett Grand Superintendent Somerset and Robert Biggs, Deputy Grand Superintendent Somerset. They were escorted by a large number of Grand and Provincial Officers.

Having been offered the Sceptre by MEZ, E.Comp. Meldon decided he would return it as he was sure he had not practised the evening’s ceremonial as recently as the Chapter officers had! He and the rest of the procession were then seated and the Chapter Officers continued with the evening’s business.
Pictured on the left are l – r E Comps Roger Hutchings, Brian Meldon, John Bennett, Rodney Nott, Bob Biggs and Philip Giorgetti.

The main item on the agenda was the Exaltation of Bro Richard
Teague. This proceeded very smoothly with all the officers involved
appearing well at ease with their ceremonial. The rest of the
evening’s business was duly completed and, once the closing address had been given, all the dignitaries processed out.  Pictured on the right are the Sojourners with the candidate after the meeting.

More raised in Ollie’s memory

A fund set up in memory of Totnes rugby player Oliver Marsden is £1,000 better off, thanks to the generosity of the Devonshire’s Freemasons.
Oliver, known as Ollie, was getting ready for training in October last year when he complained of feeling dizzy. He started to fetch a bottle of water but, tragically, collapsed and died.
At his funeral at St Mary’s Church, it seemed as though the whole of Totnes had come to pay its respects and express its grief.
But out of the tragedy, Ollie’s parents Kevin and Linda have forged a link of hope for other young people who, like their 21-year-old son, suffered from an undetected heart defect.  Linda said that in their minds, sudden death like that was something that happened to other people, not fit young men like Ollie. As time passed we discovered that in the United Kingdom, 12 apparently healthy young people a week die suddenly of undetected heart defects,’ she said. ‘Many do not die publicly in the way that Ollie had. They die in their sleep, or waiting for a bus, or sitting in a chair. It is indiscriminate and completely avoidable - £35 and 10 minutes would have saved my son’s life, because that's the price for

screening a young person and that's how long it takes.’
Fund raising in Totnes and at Plymouth University where Ollie was training to be a teacher, has already raised £22,000 for Cardiac Risk in the Young.  Kevin and Linda hope the money will enable medical screening to be carried out for many local youngsters and university students in the months to come. And they also hope the fund raising will go a long way towards supporting CRY’s campaign for a national screening programme.
The Marsdens were at the Masonic Hall in Totnes Tuesday 24th Nov 09 for the £1,000 presentation from Chris Pengelly, Grand Superintendent of the Holy Royal Arch Masons of Devonshire, who said it was ’something they were really pleased to do.’
Without fanfare or much publicity the Freemasons raise well over £33 million annually for charity in Great Briton, putting them second, only to the National Lottery.

Tiverton Freemasons raise £2,500 for Hospiscare

Members of St. Peter’s Lodge No.1125, All Souls Lodge No.6677 and St. Peter’s Mark Lodge, all from Tiverton, joined the Provincial Grand Master, R.W.Bro. Michael Penny at the Tiverton Hospice Day Centre on Wednesday 27th January when he presented a cheque to Hospiscare for £1,000 from the William Alexander Kneel Endowment (WAKE) Fund. The Tiverton Lodges then presented their own cheques totalling another £1,500.
Hospiscare is a local charity which supports people with terminal illness and their families and the donations will go directly towards helping to run the charity’s day care centre at Fig Tree Lodge, Canal Hill, which opened last year. The nurse-led centre provides a range of services and activities for patients including crafts, complementary therapy and hairdressing.
Alison Palfrey, Director of Fundraising for Hospiscare, said:
“We are very grateful for this generous donation for Hospiscare in
Tiverton. The day centre has become a key part of how we support patients in the area and we need ongoing support to continue making a difference. Many people do not realise that our services are funded by donations and the generous support of our volunteers and fundraisers, and donations such as this are vital.”

St. John’s Lodge No. 70

At the regular January meeting of St. John’s Lodge No. 70 in Plymouth, the brethren were delighted to welcome W. Bro. Maurice W. Eglinton, Assistant Provincial Grand Master, to the evening.
It is a modern tradition in 70 that formal aspect of the January meeting is kept as short as possible and, immediately after the Lodge has closed, the brethren join their families and friends for a social gathering at the festive board.
This year, as the Lodge nears the end of its 250 Anniversary Year, the brethren had also invited representatives from 8 local charities which had been nominated by members of the Lodge to receive cheques for £250 each.
They were: Plymouth Area Alzheimer’s Association, Shekinah Mission, Cardiology Department, Derriford Hospital, Plymouth Eddystone Trust, Young People’s Liturgy Group, Parish of St. Peter and the Holy Apostles, The Mustard Tree,
Derriford Hospital, Tamerton Young Leisure & Wessex Children’s Heart Circle. A ninth Charity which had been nominated, the Neo-natal Intensive Care Unit at Derriford Hospital had received its cheque earlier in order that the children might receive the benefit at their Christmas party in the hospital.
Despite the atrocious weather conditions all but one of the Charities were represented and W. Bro. Eglinton with the Worshipful Master, W. Bro. Ian Scriviner, welcomed them, together with our families and friends into the Temple.  W. Bro. Eglinton then presented the cheques and the Charity representatives gave a brief outline of the use they would be making of the money.  All then retired to the refectory where a superb meal, prepared by W. Bro. Bill Phillip and his excellent team, was enjoyed in great conviviality before everybody made a safe if perilous journey home in the arctic conditions.
The Anniversary Year will end, as it began, with a birthday lunch at the Staddon Heights Golf Club for Lodge members their families and guests on the 21st March 2010.
The photograph above shows Miss Ellie Bailey receiving a cheque for £250 on behalf of the Wessex Children’s Heart Circle from W. Bro. Maurice Eglinton Assistant Provincial Grand Master, accompanied by the W.M., W. Bro. Ian Scriviner.

History in the making for Royal Naval Chapter No.3337

At our last convocation we were privileged to perform a double Exaltation, now I here you saying, what’s so special about that, it’s been done many times?  But has any other Chapter, in the history of the Holy Royal Arch, performed a double Exaltation of a father and son on the same evening?
The father, Comp. Martin Yeoman and his son, Comp. Nick Yeoman, are both members of the Royal Naval Lodge no.3337.
The ceremony was carried out in the presence of EComp. Brian Meldon, Deputy Grand Superintendent and EComp. Simon Rowe the Provincial 3rd Grand Principal, who were also accompanied by officers of the Provincial Support team.

Brent Chapter visit for the Three Companions

Continuing their series of historical mini plays, EComp. John Eaton, EComp John Cornish and EComp Ian Passmore of the Three Companions Demonstration Team recently visited the Brent Chapter No. 1284 at Topsham.

After the Chapter was closed, they performed a re-enactment of events leading up to the founding of the first Holy Royal Arch Chapter in Redruth, Cornwall, following a successful petition by Companions of Plymouth Dock in 1791,  proving once again that Cornish Masonry started in Devonshire!

The play is based on the writings of Thomas Dunkerly and is in three parts.  For more information click here

It was a great pleasure to meet Ian and his wife and on behalf of all the patients and their families who will be supported because of your generosity we offer our sincere thanks".

Just one day in the life of a Lodge Almoner
The day after our Christmas meeting at Devon Lodge, I wrote to Derek Phillips a Past Master of the lodge who with his wife moved to the town of Carnoet in Brittany some years ago to be near their daughter and her family. As Almoner I try to cover in my letters to Derek news of the lodge, its members and of Newton Abbot, where Derek was born and still has family members.  I was surprised not to have received a reply from him as he usually replies quite quickly to my letters.  But matters then took another course two days before Christmas when I received via the Provincial website Webmaster, a message from the Secretary of The Beaumont Lodge in Brittany, W.Bro. Nick Thompson saying that a member of Devon Lodge was in hospital there. He gave me the email address of their Almoner, W.Bro Malcolm Rogers, who confirmed that it was in fact Derek Phillips who had collapsed while walking his daughters dog through snow near his home.

They were not sure what had caused him to collapse, but the local Paramedics were able to stabilise him and removed him to hospital where he was admitted for a stay of ten days where lots of tests were carried out before he was finally discharged.  It was very gratifying for me to know that the Secretary of Beaumont Lodge took time to get in touch with me concerning Derek and for their Almoner to visit him in hospital on our behalf.  I have thanked both W.Bro. Nick and W.Bro. Malcolm for their truly Masonic care in visiting Derek during his stay in the local hospital and keeping me informed accordingly.
On the 10th January I was pleased to receive a letter from Derek thanking me for my letter which he had received two days before his accident. He said that he had no recollection of what had happened when he collapsed, but was glad to be home from hospital although very bruised and battered.

The Prestonian Lecture 2010

This years Prestonian Lecture entitled “Music in Masonry and Beyond" delivered by W.Bro. W. Warlow, will be held at 5pm on Tuesday 2nd November. It will be hosted by the Torbay Masters Lodge No. 8227 at the Masonic Hall Courtland Road Paignton.  Further details can be obtained from W.Bro.C.P.Le.Marquand 01626354168 or email kit.marquand@talktalk.net

The Prestonian Lecture is named after W.Bro.William Preston, a noted ritualist, who left a bequest in 1818 to fund “some well-informed Freemason to deliver annually a Lecture on the First, Second, or Third Degree of the Order of
Masonry.” Since that date, the nomination of the annual Prestonian Lecturer has been considered to be one of the
most prestigious appointments in the field of masonic research.  There have been many famous Prestonian Lecturers over the years and, ever since, the subjects of the lecture have been extended

beyond the three degrees of Freemasonry.  Each Prestonian Lecturer has provided the Craft with information on a wide number of subjects that are of interest to freemasons worldwide. For example, the Prestonian Lecturer for 2006, W Bro. Granville Angell, chose “The Victoria Cross Freemasons’ Band of Brothers” as his subject, having spent a great many years in researching the lives of those brethren who have been awarded the Commonwealth’s highest recognition of valour.
